Fat Loss vs Weight Loss- What’s the difference?

We’ve all seen the headlines and the promises made by weight-loss magazines and self-help books, “lose 10 pounds in ten days”. It took you more than ten days to gain those ten pounds so it’s definitely going to take you more than 10 days to lose them!

So what’s the problem with the above statement? The weight you’re losing is unlikely to just be comprised of fat, which ,if we’re honest, is what you’re aiming to lose. It’s more likely to be made up of a combination of water, muscle and a small amount of fat. This isn’t ideal. While the scales may tell you you’ve lost weight and in the short term this will be satisfying, these drastic diets are never sustainable and rarely give you the results you’re looking for- unfortunately there’s no quick fix!

If you are looking to trim down and make a positive change to your physique, you want to lose fat and build lean muscle. In order to achieve this you want to add resistance training to your workout. The reformer is an excellent way of doing this as it really helps clients to tone and gain lean muscle. This muscle can burn fat, this is why it is such a vital form of training- it really gets results!

Cardiovascular exercise in the form of running, cycling etc is also important as part of your routine but it’s important not to overdo it as ultimately this can eat into your lean muscle. 

Here are some key tips to help you achieve your goals!

  • Resistance training is key
  • Healthy eating including the right foods and appropriate portion sizes
  • Get a good night sleep 
  • Be consistent and keep your goals in mind 
  • Include a moderate amount of cardiovascular exercise in your routine

The scales won’t tell you the full story, and unless you have a lot of weight to lose we encourage you not to fixate on the number on the scales. The important things to focus on are how you feel, how well your clothes fit, lower body fat percentage and better mood!
